The new leadership of the National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof), the National Council, was elected today with an impressive 96.6% of the votes, from a total of 597 voters, as announced by the outgoing secretary-general, Mário Nogueira, to Lusa news agency.
According to the same source, there were nine blank votes and 11 null votes.
For the Jurisdiction Council, the oversight body, the same number of voters participated. List A secured 554 votes (92.7%), while List B received 33 votes (5.5%). The count also revealed six blank votes and four null votes.
A statement from Fenprof confirmed the election of seven full members from List A.
Fenprof also announced the election of Francisco Gonçalves and José Feliciano da Costa (List A) as the new secretaries-general, succeeding Mário Nogueira after his 18-year tenure leading the largest teachers' union organization.
The election took place during the 15th National Congress of Teachers, concluding today in Lisbon.
Francisco Gonçalves and José Feliciano Costa, a Geography teacher and a Physical Education teacher, respectively, have pledged to continue the long-standing battles of the National Federation of Teachers.
The Action Program, presented by the National Secretariat and Fenprof's seven unions — "Valuation, now! For a Profession with a future and a quality public Education!" — was unanimously approved this morning.
