Alexandra Leitão, the PS candidate for Lisbon's municipal elections, has proposed extending free public transport to all residents of the city. This initiative is the cornerstone of her campaign, aiming to enhance sustainability and improve the quality of urban life.
A Clear Focus on Public Transport
Leitão's plan emphasizes the need to prioritize public transport by ensuring more comfort, better service quality, and increased efficiency. This includes improvements in bus stops and stations, fleet upgrades, more BUS corridors, and enhanced service reliability and coverage.
Currently, public transport in Lisbon is free for youth under 23 and seniors over 65. Leitão's proposal seeks to expand this benefit to all residents, following the successful model of the Metropolitan Navigante Pass, introduced six years ago.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
The candidate highlights the dual benefits of her proposal: reducing car dependency for a greener city and alleviating the financial burden on families, where transport costs account for 11.3% of urban household expenses, nearly matching food expenses at 12.2%.
Leitão's commitment to a fairer, more inclusive, and environmentally friendly Lisbon is clear. She has chosen to focus solely on the municipal race, underscoring the importance of these elections for the PS, which she believes will emerge victorious.
