Ramalho Eanes, the former President of Portugal, expressed his gratitude for the decoration awarded by current President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa during the 10th June celebrations in Lagos. Eanes highlighted the generosity of the gesture, which he sees as a tribute to all Portuguese citizens, including military personnel, workers, and intellectuals.
During his speech, Eanes praised Marcelo's address, noting its emphasis on community and the collective journey of the Portuguese people. He reflected on the nation's past mistakes and its resilience in overcoming them, underscoring the importance of unity in facing future challenges.
Eanes pointed out that the Portuguese are now confronted with a "terrible challenge", one that is internally driven but exacerbated by external factors. He stressed the collective desire of the Portuguese people to shape their future together.
The ceremony marked the first time the Grand Collar of the Military Order of Avis was awarded, recognizing Eanes' significant contributions to Portugal. This honor is reserved for military officers and units, highlighting Eanes' distinguished service.
Ramalho Eanes, who served as President from 1976 to 1986, was a pivotal figure in Portugal's transition to democracy. His leadership during and after the Carnation Revolution has left a lasting legacy on the nation.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has previously lauded Eanes as a "wise observer" of Portugal's present and future, acknowledging his lifelong service to the country. Eanes' military career, including his role in the Colonial War and the 25th of November 1975, has been instrumental in shaping Portugal's modern history.
