Man Suspected of Murder in Brazil Arrested in Portugal

A man accused of shooting and killing another individual in Brazil back in 2015 was apprehended in Lisbon on Thursday by the Judicial Police (PJ). The suspect had fled to Portugal nine years ago, where he managed to rebuild his life, establishing a relationship with a Portuguese partner and fathering a young daughter.

Details of the Case

The 31-year-old suspect worked as a driver in Portugal and had his residency status regularized in the country, according to a statement from the PJ. The crime is believed to have occurred in a public area in the Brazilian state of Goiás, with the victim suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

Brazilian judicial authorities issued an international arrest warrant one year prior to the arrest. Following his detention, the man was presented to the Lisbon Court of Appeal and has been placed in preventive detention while awaiting extradition proceedings to Brazil. If extradited and convicted, he faces a potential prison sentence of up to 30 years.
