PJ Arrests Two in Lisbon Under International Warrants
The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) has announced the detention of two individuals in the Lisbon region under international arrest warrants issued by Brazilian authorities. Both were legally residing in Portugal at the time of their capture.
Details of the First Detainee
One of the detainees, a 31-year-old man, was located on June 20 in the Lisbon area. He had been wanted since 2017 for a qualified robbery in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, Brazil. According to the PJ, he had been living in Portugal since late 2017 with his residency status properly regularized.
"Three men, including the now-detained individual, carried out an armed robbery on an ATM inside a supermarket in Embu das Artes, stealing 528,000 reais, equivalent to 83,000 euros," reads the statement sent to newsrooms, adding that the group also stole "a security and cash transport company, a shotgun, and three revolvers."
Details of the Second Detainee
The other detainee, also a 31-year-old man, is suspected of committing a qualified homicide in 2015 in the state of Goiás, Brazil. The PJ highlights that he risks a 30-year prison sentence if convicted.
"After the shootings, the detainee traveled to Portugal, where he has been for about nine years, currently working as a driver. He lives with his Portuguese partner and a minor daughter and has his stay in national territory regularized," reveals the PJ.
Legal Proceedings
Both individuals have been presented to the Lisbon Court of Appeal and are currently detained awaiting further steps in the extradition process.
