Volt Demands Annulment of Chega's Municipal Lists in Lisbon

The Volt party has formally requested the annulment of Chega's candidate lists for the Lisbon municipal elections, citing a ruling by the Constitutional Court that deemed Chega's internal organs illegal and illegitimate.

Mateus Carvalho, the head of Volt's list for the Lisbon Municipal Assembly, submitted the complaint, arguing that Chega has repeatedly operated outside the law and that their lists should have been invalidated in previous elections.

"This Friday, Mateus Carvalho signed a complaint calling for the annulment of Chega's lists for the Lisbon municipal organs," the party stated in a release.

Carvalho emphasized that the Constitutional Court has twice ruled Chega's internal bodies as illegal, stripping them of any authority over candidate selection. He described Chega as an extreme-right party that disregards democratic rules.

"It's incomprehensible that we all stand by, calm and unperturbed, watching this constant assault on the rule of law," Carvalho remarked, urging for stronger actions to defend democracy.

The electoral law allows for complaints against irregularities in competing lists, a tool Carvalho insists must be used to uphold integrity.

In the upcoming October 12 elections, multiple parties are vying for Lisbon's municipal council, including PS/Livre/BE/PAN, PSD/CDS-PP/IL, CDU, Nova Direita, Chega, Volt, ADN, and Democrática Aliança. Currently, Carlos Moedas of PSD leads the council without an absolute majority.
