Heatwave Continues with No Relief in Sight
Twelve districts in mainland Portugal are under an orange warning (the second most severe) due to the persistent hot weather, as announced by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA). This alert is in effect from today until Tuesday.
Key Districts Affected
- Bragança and Vila Real were under a red warning (the most severe) until 6 PM today, now downgraded to orange.
- Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre have been under an orange warning since 10:40 AM today, with very high maximum temperatures expected to persist until Tuesday.
- Faro, Setúbal, Santarém, and Lisbon will join the orange warning from 9 AM Monday until 6 PM Tuesday, currently under a yellow warning.
Yellow Warnings in Place
- Porto, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga are under a yellow warning due to high maximum temperatures in the interior districts.
Fire Risk Alert
The IPMA also warns of a high risk of rural fires across mainland Portugal, with many municipalities in the North, Center, and Algarve regions at maximum or very high risk until at least August 18.
Government Response
The government has renewed the alert status due to the ongoing high temperatures and the need to reduce fire ignitions through enforced prohibitions.
