The Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation, under the leadership of Fernando Alexandre, introduces a new State Secretariat for Higher Education, appointing ClĂĄudia Sarrico, a distinguished professor from the University of Minho. Sarrico, recently named to represent Portugal at the OECD's Directorate for Science, Technology, and Innovation, brings a wealth of experience from her roles at the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
This move marks the reautonomization of Higher Education, which was previously merged under the first Government of LuĂs Montenegro and separated from Education during AntĂłnio Costa's administrations.
In another significant change, Helena CanhĂŁo, director of NOVA Medical School and former president of the National Council of Medical Schools (CEMP), steps in as the Secretary of State for Science and Innovation, replacing Ana Paiva. CanhĂŁo, a renowned professor of Medicine, has been a vocal advocate for diversifying medical schools by admitting international students, a policy recently implemented by Minister Fernando Alexandre.
The reshuffle also sees the continuation of Alexandre Homem de Cristo as Assistant Secretary of State for Education and Maria LuĂsa Oliveira, former director-general of School Administration, in their respective roles. This restructuring follows the dismissal of Pedro Dantas da Cunha, linked to controversies over inaccurate student attendance data and the promotion of a gender identity guide in schools.
