Earthquake Impact on IPMA's Website
On Monday, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Charneca da Caparica, felt by many in Greater Lisbon and other regions of Portugal. This seismic event, which occurred at 1:24 PM local time, resulted in an overwhelming surge of traffic to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) website, causing it to go down for approximately 30 minutes.
The IPMA reported that there were over 420,000 active accesses to their site during this period as people sought official information about the earthquake and its aftershocks. In response to the increased demand and to prevent future disruptions, the IPMA announced plans to invest €3.4 million in improving their electrical, communication, and IT infrastructure. This investment aims to enhance the website's capacity and ensure better access during emergency situations like this.
