Coimbra, May 13, 2025 — Italian President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the strong similarities and close ties between Italy and Portugal during a ceremony at the University of Coimbra. He highlighted how both nations share a common history of fighting for democracy, freedom, and political pluralism, rejecting authoritarian regimes.
Mattarella, alongside Spain's King Felipe VI, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the university, with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa presiding over the event. The Italian President pointed out the symbolic significance of both countries celebrating April 25 — marking Portugal's Freedom Day and Italy's Liberation Day — as a testament to their shared democratic values.
"Our histories are marked by similar battles to ensure that the ideals of democracy and freedom prevail," Mattarella stated. He also noted the geographical and cultural bonds that have strengthened over centuries, including a shared Latin heritage and maritime traditions.
The ceremony also recognized Mattarella's political mediation skills and his steadfast support for the European project, even in the face of rising Euroscepticism. Professor Raquel Freire praised his commitment to human rights and democratic principles, calling it an example of principled leadership.
