The information was provided by the provedor of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Mirandela, Adérito Gomes, to the Lusa news agency. The elderly woman was admitted to the intensive care unit at Bragança Hospital on Saturday in serious condition due to smoke inhalation. She was later moved out of intensive care but remained hospitalized until her death tonight.
This marks the seventh death resulting from the fire at the Bom Samaritano nursing home, operated by the Misericórdia de Mirandela, which occurred on Saturday. Six individuals died on the day of the incident—three from burns and three from smoke inhalation.
Additionally, two residents are still hospitalized at Mirandela Hospital for smoke inhalation. In total, 25 people were injured in the event.
The Attorney General's Office confirmed to Lusa that an investigation into the fire has been opened. It is believed to have been caused by a short circuit in an electric anti-bedsore mattress.
The case is being investigated by the Polícia Judiciária, and the Instituto da Segurança Social (ISS) has initiated an inquiry process to assess the circumstances.
