133 families selected in a housing lottery under Lisbon's Habitar Lisboa Program are now facing uncertainty after the city council canceled the draw due to regulatory non-compliance. The families, many of whom had already given notice on their current homes, are demanding clarity and solutions from the municipality.
The Controversy Unfolds
The lottery, part of the 29th Affordable Rent Program (PRA), was conducted a day earlier than scheduled, leading to its annulment. The Lisbon City Council, led by PSD/CDS-PP, cited failure to meet required public transmission formalities and the advertised date and time as reasons for the cancellation.
Families Left in the Lurch
Ana Gaspar, one of the affected individuals, shared her distress with Lusa, highlighting the emotional and practical toll on families. Many had informed landlords of their impending moves, only to find themselves potentially homeless. Psychological stress and financial vulnerability are rampant among the group, with some experiencing severe anxiety attacks.
Seeking Solutions
The families have launched an online petition calling for resolution and transparency. They propose a new lottery excluding the initially selected 133 families, given the city's available housing stock. Meanwhile, the Housing Councilor, Filipa Roseta (PSD), has initiated an internal inquiry to ascertain facts and responsibilities, promising public findings to ensure process credibility.
A new lottery is scheduled for June 27, including all original applicants, but the affected families remain in a precarious position, awaiting assurances from the council.
