Chega's leader, André Ventura, announced plans to propose a parliamentary inquiry commission to investigate the actions of recent PS and PSD/CDS governments in granting nationality and residency to foreign citizens. This move comes amidst controversy over a rejected Chega bill on nationality law changes, deemed potentially unconstitutional by the Assembly of the Republic's president.
Ventura criticized the decision to block their bill, accusing the Assembly's president of hindering Chega's political actions and aligning with the Prime Minister's stance on revoking nationality for those convicted of serious crimes. The inquiry aims to uncover responsibilities in what Ventura describes as the 'disorganized entry of people into Portugal,' including those with criminal records, without proper checks.
The initiative will proceed without needing plenary approval, anticipating opposition from PSD and PS. Ventura insists on the necessity to determine if criminal responsibilities should be forwarded to the Public Ministry, highlighting a need for accountability in past governance decisions.
