Eduardo Jesus, the Secretary of Tourism, Environment, and Culture in Madeira, has publicly apologized following the revelation of insults he directed at socialist parliamentarians Sílvia Silva and Sancha Campanella during a Regional Assembly session. The incident, which occurred last Tuesday, saw Jesus referring to a question as "this chick's question" and even going as far as to call someone a "stupid face...".
In his apology, Jesus expressed his regret and offered his apologies for what happened during the parliamentary session, insisting he had no intention to offend the deputies or the parliamentary institution itself. Despite initially defending his choice of words as part of the "Portuguese language dictionary" and "popular lexicon" in comments to "Diário de Notícias da Madeira", his tone shifted when addressing the President of the Madeira Legislative Assembly, Rubina Leal. In a letter, he attributed his remarks to the tension generated by the heated political debate.
The incident gained traction after videos of the session, broadcast by RTP Madeira, started circulating on social media. PS-Madeira deputy Victor Freitas was among those who shared clips from the live debate, where Jesus's insults were clearly audible.
In response, the PS-Madeira submitted a formal protest to the Madeira Legislative Assembly against the "offensive language and unworthy behavior of the Secretary of Tourism, Environment, and Culture", as stated on the party's official website. Reports from "Visão" also revealed that Jesus used additional derogatory terms like "bardamerda" and "palhaço-mor" during interventions by a JPP deputy.
