In a groundbreaking legal move, members of a neo-Nazi group have been indicted under Portugal's terrorism laws for the first time. This marks a significant shift in the application of anti-terrorism legislation, previously reserved for groups like ETA or the Islamic State.
The operation, led by the Judicial Police, targeted the Movimento Armilar Lusitano (MAL), a far-right militia with plans to invade the Parliament. Six suspects were detained, with four held in preventive custody and two under house arrest.
Notably, this case also saw a police officer charged for the first time in connection with neo-Nazi crimes, highlighting the depth of the investigation.

The MAL's ambitions were not just talk; weapons and explosives were found, underscoring the serious threat they posed. This operation not only disrupts a dangerous group but also sets a legal precedent in Portugal's fight against far-right extremism.
