Lisbon Metro's New Trains Still Running Empty at Night: What's Causing the Delay?

The new carriages for the Lisbon Metro (ML), whose purchase was announced back in 2020, are still only operating during the night and without passengers. This information was confirmed to CM by the company.

"Currently, two prototypes are circulating on the network, exclusively during the night and outside commercial operating hours. During the day, tests and trials are conducted in the material park and workshops," stated ML in response to Correio da Manhã.

The purchase of 42 carriages was announced in 2020, but so far, only these two prototypes are in use. This delay raises questions about when the full fleet will be operational and available for public use.

Key Details:

  • The new carriages are part of a significant investment to modernize Lisbon's public transport.
  • The prototypes are undergoing rigorous testing to ensure safety and reliability.
  • The Metro company has not provided a specific timeline for when the carriages will enter regular service.

This situation highlights the challenges in upgrading urban transport infrastructure and the importance of thorough testing before full deployment.
