The Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) has officially endorsed António José Seguro for the upcoming presidential election, following a joint proposal from Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro and party President Carlos César. This decision was approved by the PS National Commission during a meeting in Penafiel, Porto district.
Carneiro emphasized that only the PS determines its political timing, highlighting the party's autonomy in decision-making. The support for Seguro was deliberately postponed until after the recent local elections held last Sunday, underscoring strategic planning.
The National Commission meeting began around 3 PM, with key agenda items including the analysis of PS results in the local elections and the party's stance on the 2026 State Budget vote. This gathering precedes the party's parliamentary sessions scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in the same location.
Carneiro praised Seguro as the representative of democratic socialism and authentic social democracy, citing his extensive political experience. He noted Seguro's roles, including former PS Secretary-General, deputy, Secretary of State for Youth, minister under António Guterres, and Member of the European Parliament, emphasizing his proven commitment to democratic and constitutional values.
