Europride 2025 made history in Lisbon as thousands marched down Avenida da Liberdade to celebrate LGBTI+ rights under the theme "Proudly Yourselves". The event, a first for Portugal, was a vibrant display of authenticity, unity, and love, with participants waving colorful flags and carrying empowering signs.
Organized by Variações - Associação de Comércio e Turismo LGBTI de Portugal, with support from Turismo de Portugal and the Lisbon City Council, the march was not just a celebration but a call to action. José Marquina, president of Variações, emphasized the importance of such events in advocating for LGBTI+ rights, especially in light of regressive policies in countries like Hungary.
Participants from across Europe, including a Spanish-French couple dressed as sailors, shared their reasons for joining: "We must always fight for freedom and for those who can't come out." Portuguese attendee Helena Lima highlighted the march's role in raising awareness and combating prejudice, while German participant Eva philosophized, "Love is love, regardless of who you love."
The march concluded at Terreiro do Paço, leaving a lasting impression of joy, resistance, and solidarity on Lisbon's streets.
