A public petition titled 'We Demand the Resignation of the Madeira Regional Secretary for Misogynistic Statements' has already been signed by over 1,300 people, just 48 hours after being posted on the portal www.peticaopublica.com.
The site, which provides a free public service for all Portuguese to support the causes they believe in and create online petitions, has several others ongoing. This particular petition against Eduardo Jesus's continuity in the Regional Government had gathered a total of 1,320 signatures by 5:00 PM today.
During the debate on the Regional Budget, the Secretary of Tourism, Environment, and Culture of Madeira used expressions such as 'This chick's question', 'Stupid face...', it is recalled. These "words, directed at elected deputies, are misogynistic, offensive, and completely unacceptable in a democratic State of Law. This behavior cannot be ignored, relativized, or excused by those with public responsibilities," the petition states, demanding not only the resignation of the official responsible for the Tourism, Environment, and Culture portfolios but also a "firm public stance against misogynistic and aggressive attitudes in political life" by the PSD Madeira.
The petition was created last Thursday, June 19, two days after the controversial plenary session to debate the regional budget for 2025.
