The Algarve is often seen as a pricey summer destination, but is there truth to claims of affordable lodging? Hélder Martins, president of the Algarve's Hotel and Tourist Enterprises Association (AHETA), insists that the region isn't more expensive than others. He points to 4,500 available accommodations on Booking.com, with 5% priced between €20-€50 per day and 25% between €50-€100. However, an investigation by Observador tells a different story.
A closer look reveals only six accommodations under €50, including a caravan and shared dormitories, far from the 225 claimed. Similarly, only 161 listings fell into the €50-€100 range, not the 1,125 suggested. Just six of these were beachfront, with many offering shared facilities.
Martins argues that the Algarve's focus on quality justifies higher prices, questioning if targeting budget-conscious Portuguese travelers is viable. He emphasizes the need to attract international visitors willing to pay for premium experiences, suggesting locals may need to adjust their travel timing or expectations.
This discrepancy raises questions about affordability and accessibility in one of Portugal's most beloved tourist regions, especially as locals seek alternatives to high summer prices.
