The Lisbon Popular Marches are the highlight of the Lisbon Festivals, dating back to 1932. This year, Alcântara and Bairro Alto tied for first place in the Lisbon Popular Marches Contest. The Marcha da Bica came in third, having won the 2023 edition.
Other 17 groups participated in this year's contest. According to EGEAC, São Vicente and Alcântara won in the categories of Best Choreography and Best Scenography, respectively. The Best Costume award was also shared by the two marches.
The Alma de Lisboa was the central theme of this year's Grande Marcha de Lisboa, with lyrics and music by Gimba, performed by all participating groups (in addition to their own songs). The event brought together over 1,800 participants this year.
Mercado da Ajuda
The Mercado da Ajuda in Lisbon is much more than just a market. Besides supporting the local economy, it plays a crucial role as a space for social inclusion and community dynamization.
One of its standout initiatives is the free furniture restoration workshops by Oficina Criativa Ripas. Here, participants learn to restore old furniture, give it a new life, and contribute to environmental sustainability.
The president of the Junta de Freguesia da Ajuda, Jorge Marques, believes the Market should serve as an "anchor" for all local commerce in the parish, helping to promote a lifestyle of community and closeness among people.
Areeiro
In the printed edition of Olhares de Lisboa, there's also a special notebook on the freguesia do Areeiro, a parish where the past and the future coexist in harmony and complement each other.
It's simultaneously the parish of neighborhoods, of neighbors who know each other, greet each other, and help each other out... of families that were born – grandparents, parents, and grandchildren – and still live in the Parish, of generational gatherings in parks and gardens, and also of new people, families who have more recently chosen Areeiro to live, bringing with them new visions and more dynamism.
The Junta de Freguesia do Areeiro has been a true driving force in this Lisbon parish. Pedro Jesus is the president and the face of an executive where people are and will always be the priority.
