Concerns Over Higher Education Access in Portugal
With the results of the first phase of the national higher education access competition released this Sunday, the model for university entry is under intense scrutiny. A significant decrease in both applicants and, consequently, the number of students placed has sparked widespread debate.
José Moreira, president of the Sindicato Nacional do Ensino Superior (SNESup), emphasized the critical choice facing the country: "Portugal must decide whether to restrict access due to perceived underprepared students or have institutions address these gaps. In my view, the country cannot afford to waste these individuals."
Students are pointing fingers at the high costs of studying, while rectors are awaiting the third phase to assess the impact of recent changes. However, some are already calling for an immediate review of the rules to prevent further exclusion and ensure educational opportunities are maximized.
