Main Decisions and Support Measures
In an extraordinary meeting held this Monday, the Lisbon City Council approved the primary proposals concerning the recent Gloria Funicular accident. Although a consensus was not reached for a single document, the session ensured support and tributes for the victims, alongside the establishment of a transparency portal dedicated to the tragedy. Future safety measures were also endorsed during the council meeting, which concluded recently.
Meeting Overview and Proceedings
The councilors commenced the meeting at 10:00 AM, took a break for lunch, and resumed discussions after 2:30 PM. The sole agenda item was to debate the aftermath of the derailment of the Gloria Funicular that occurred last Wednesday. This extraordinary gathering included the attendance of the president of Carris, the public transport company.
Political Criticisms and Accusations
Opposition councilors did not hold back in their criticism of the executive led by Carlos Moedas, accusing them of a slow response to the accident and failing to address raised questions. They further charged the mayor with cowardice, as Carlos Moedas left the meeting early on Monday.
Proposed Initiatives by the Executive
The Moedas-led executive proposed creating a portal to host "all relevant documents about the accident" and suggested a municipal fund to support the victims. Additionally, they aim to form a mission team to design a new technological system for the historic funicular.
Opposition Contributions and Current Situation
The Socialist Party (PS) aligned with the fund proposal and recommended an external audit of the incident. The Gloria Funicular derailment last Wednesday resulted in 16 fatalities and over 20 injuries, with four individuals still hospitalized: two at Hospital de S. José (one in intensive care) and two at Hospital Santa Maria (both in stable condition in intensive care).
