In the heart of Lisbon, a unique social initiative is set to transform the Parque Mayer area. The Café dos Artistas, approved by the Santo António parish assembly in late September, will combine a pastry school, café, and performance space to support vulnerable individuals through employment and training.
Bridging Social Inclusion and Culture
Located opposite the Teatro Maria Vitória, this project aims to unite social inclusion, professional training, and culture. It will provide jobs and qualifications for people in vulnerable situations, fostering a supportive environment. The initiative is a collaboration between the Junta de Freguesia de Santo António and the Associação Amigos do Parque Mayer.
A Stage for Aspiring Artists
What sets this café apart is its staff: all employees will be aspiring actors and singers who perform classic musical theater numbers when not serving customers. This allows young artists to earn a salary, fund their studies, and hone their talents, inspired by New York's famous Ellen's Stardust Diner.
Comprehensive Support and Training
Beyond performances, the project offers training in traditional pastry-making, customer service, and business management. It also includes psychological support and professional development. A social and cultural fund, supported by customer donations, will help cover essential expenses like rent and arts education, such as dance, singing, or acting classes. All profits will be reinvested into the project to ensure its sustainability.
Future Developments
The Associação Amigos do Parque Mayer will handle the space's adaptation, rehabilitation, and equipment. While an opening date has not been announced, this venture promises to enrich Lisbon's cultural scene while making a tangible social impact.
