The Madeiran priest Martins Júnior, suspended 'a divinis' for 42 years, passed away at the age of 86 on Thursday night, as reported by DIÁRIO. His death has sparked a wave of tributes, notably from writer and historian Raquel Varela, who penned 'O Canto do Melro' about his life.
Raquel Varela's heartfelt tribute highlighted Martins Júnior's unparalleled role in the Carnation Revolution, stating, "Portugal loses today - I have no doubts - the central figure that encapsulates the Carnation Revolution." She emphasized his unique approach to using his ecclesiastical knowledge for emancipation rather than domination, creating a participatory democracy in Ribeira Seca.
Martins Júnior's legacy includes abolishing confession to prevent blackmail and denunciations to PIDE, and fostering a community where decisions were made collectively. Facing threats from far-right militias, he organized a self-defense committee, showcasing his commitment to action over prayer.
Varela recalls his profound impact, from his stance against the colonial war to his unconventional marriage ceremony for her and her partner, underlining his belief in equality and love. His last mass was celebrated on February 5, 2023, marking a lifetime of serving "the people of God, not the Catholic Church."
The presentation of 'O Canto do Melro' in Grândola was canceled due to his passing, but Varela will honor him at the book fair on June 21.
