Six districts in Portugal are under a yellow weather alert starting Friday due to expected high temperatures. The alert, issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), will be in effect from 10:00 AM Friday until 6:00 AM Saturday.
The affected districts include Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, Beja, and Portalegre, with temperatures predicted to soar above 40 degrees Celsius in some areas, particularly inland regions.
What to Expect
- Rising Temperatures: From Thursday onwards, a significant increase in temperatures is forecasted, with maximum temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius across most of the mainland and reaching up to 40 degrees in the interior of the southern region and the Tagus Valley.
- Strong Winds: The Lisbon district is also under a yellow alert for strong winds, with gusts up to 70 km/h expected, especially in coastal and mountainous areas.
- Nighttime Heat: Minimum temperatures are expected to surpass 20 degrees in some inland areas, particularly in the south, Tagus Valley, and Beira Baixa.
The IPMA explains that this weather pattern is due to an anticyclone moving towards the east/northeast, intensifying and extending towards the Bay of Biscay by July 24, and potentially affecting Central Europe by July 25 or 26. This, combined with a low-pressure area between North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula, will transport hot and dry air masses over mainland Portugal.
Impact on Madeira
The archipelago of Madeira is not spared, with maximum temperatures expected to reach or exceed 30 degrees, especially on the south-facing slopes and mountainous regions.
The yellow alert signifies a potential risk for certain activities dependent on weather conditions, urging residents and visitors to take necessary precautions against the heat.
