Summary:

  • Montenegro rejects any post-election deal with Chega or a central bloc with PS.

  • He emphasizes the need for legitimate popular votes to implement their program.

  • Sectoral agreements may occur, but no central bloc is on the table.

  • Montenegro criticizes PS's economic strategy as a path to impoverishment.

  • PS leader calls for concentration of votes to defeat the coalition.

Montenegro's Stance on Government Formation

On Monday, Luís Montenegro submitted the AD - PSD/CDS coalition list to the Aveiro Court, reiterating his rejection of a post-election agreement with Chega led by André Ventura, as well as any notion of a central bloc with the PS. He emphasized that the goal is to legitimize popular votes to implement their program, aiming for a majority among voters without any backroom agreements that undermine the electorate.

No Central Bloc

Montenegro was clear about the impossibility of a central bloc, stating, "sectoral agreements may happen, but not a rehash of a central bloc." He affirmed that their proposal is to govern without any solution in collaboration with the PS, as their policies are fundamentally different. He stated that “the country doesn’t need a central bloc, nor would it be beneficial.”

Exclusion of Chega

Regarding Chega, Montenegro firmly excluded any government agreement, describing the party as lacking the “posture and maturity” to take on such responsibilities.

Campaigning for the Future

Montenegro also outlined his vision for a future campaign leading up to the early elections on May 18, proposing clear distinctions between the PSD and PS. He highlighted the goal of creating more wealth to distribute equitably, criticizing the PS for its approach of distributing without creating, which he labels as a path to impoverishment.

Economic Proposals

He advocated for lowering corporate tax (IRC) to enhance the competitiveness of the business sector, pointing out that historically, reducing tax rates has led to increased revenue. He remarked, “Sometimes, lowering tax rates means collecting more revenue,” urging the PS to recognize this.

PS's Response

On the other hand, PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos called for concentration of votes in his party to defeat the AD coalition and close what he considers a suspicion chapter over the executive power. He stressed, “We will work to win the elections,” highlighting the importance of rallying votes for an effective government.

Confidence in PS's Lists

As the head of the list for Aveiro, Santos expressed confidence in the PS's electoral program, insisting on the necessity to “close this chapter and start a new phase with proposals that effectively solve the problems of the Portuguese.”
