Francisco Gonçalves and José Feliciano Costa have been elected as the new joint leaders of Fenprof, Portugal's most representative teachers' organization. They were chosen this Saturday and have pledged to continue the union's tradition of being both a protest and proposal entity.
At Fenprof's headquarters in Lisbon, an exhibition showcases various struggles, including the fight against the 'Apagão' and the demand for the recognition of nine years, four months, and two days of frozen service time. Both Gonçalves and Costa have been actively involved in these campaigns, working closely behind Mário Nogueira, the charismatic and controversial figure who led Fenprof for 18 years.
Despite the challenge of succeeding such a prominent leader, the new leaders are not intimidated. They aim to maintain Fenprof's role as a critical voice for teachers' rights and the defense of public education, emphasizing that public schools should not be reduced to mere 'social cushions.'
