Operafest 2025: A Celebration of Forbidden Loves
Lisbon and Oeiras are gearing up to host the 6th edition of Operafest from August 29 to September 16, 2025. This festival aims to bring opera closer to the public, with this year's theme centered on forbidden loves, exploring tales haunted by disease, death, social class, duty, and betrayal—themes that have inspired extraordinary operas throughout history.
Key Highlights and Performances
Led by soprano Catarina Molder and produced by Ópera do Castelo, the event features a rich program across various venues in the capital and Oeiras. Audiences can enjoy:
- Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell at the Aula Magna on August 29 and 30 at 9 PM.
- The national premiere of Julie (2005) by Belgian composer Philippe de Boesmans at Culturgest on September 5 at 9 PM and September 6 at 7 PM.
- The Cine-opera cycle at Cinemateca Portuguesa, showcasing film adaptations of classics like La Traviata, Castle of the Bluebeard, Miss Julie, and The Day of Despair on various dates from September 3 to 9.
- Opera and Literature conferences at Âmbito Cultural – El Corte Inglês, featuring talks by Paulo Ferreira de Castro on September 15 at 6:30 PM and Rui Vieira Nery on September 16 at 6:30 PM, delving into the theme of forbidden loves in opera.
