Summary:

  • 33 out of 38 Moroccan migrants who arrived by boat in the Algarve have requested asylum in Portugal.

  • The group includes families and minors, with one unaccompanied child who will be protected under national laws.

  • Migrants are currently detained in Temporary Installation Centers in Porto and Faro, awaiting decisions from AIMA.

  • The asylum applications suspend the return process to Morocco, emphasizing humanitarian considerations.

Arrival and Demographics

On August 8, a small and dangerously fragile boat, just over 5 meters long, arrived at Boca do Rio beach in Vila do Bispo, Algarve. It carried 38 individuals: 25 men, 6 women, and 7 minors. Among them were families, including a couple with children aged 1 and 10, a father with an 8-year-old, and three 17-year-olds accompanied by cousins. Notably, one unaccompanied minor made the journey alone.

Asylum Requests and Current Status

33 of the 38 migrants have applied for humanitarian protection in Portugal, which has temporarily halted their return process to Morocco. These individuals are currently held in Temporary Installation Centers in Porto and Faro. The decision on their asylum claims rests with AIMA (Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum). The unaccompanied minor will be rehoused under Portugal's child and youth protection laws.

This situation highlights ongoing migration challenges and Portugal's response mechanisms.
