A Prestigious Honor for the Sanctuary
The revered statue of Our Lady of Fátima, which pilgrims venerate in the Chapel of Apparitions, is returning from the Vatican with a Golden Rose—a prestigious distinction awarded by Pope Leo XIV. This marks the statue's fourth journey to Rome, where it was honored during a prayer vigil in St. Peter's Square.
The Significance of the Golden Rose
This Golden Rose is the highest symbol of distinction bestowed by the Pope upon sovereigns, sanctuaries, churches, and cities. The Sanctuary of Fátima already holds three other Golden Roses in its collection, gifted by Pope Francis (2017), Pope Benedict XVI (2010), and Pope Paul VI (1965). The latest addition underscores the sanctuary's enduring spiritual importance.
The October Pilgrimage Celebrations
The statue will return to the sanctuary in time for the October pilgrimage, commemorating the final apparition of Our Lady to the three shepherd children. The pilgrimage begins on Sunday at 9:30 PM with the solemn blessing of candles and the recitation of the rosary at the Chapel of Apparitions. This is followed by the candlelight procession and a celebration of the word in the sanctuary's prayer area. The ceremonies are presided over by Archbishop Claudio Dalla Zuanna of Beira, Mozambique, and conclude on Monday with Mass at the altar and the farewell procession.
A Response to Papal Invitations
This visit to Rome was in response to an invitation from Pope Francis to participate in the Day of Marian Spirituality. Pope Leo XIV reinforced this request and marked the occasion by presenting the Golden Rose, highlighting the deep connection between the Vatican and the Sanctuary of Fátima.
