The Vatican has announced the appointment of D. Nélio Pita, a 51-year-old Vincentian religious, as the auxiliary bishop of Braga. The episcopal ordination is set to take place on July 27th at the Braga Cathedral, marking a significant moment for the Archdiocese.

D. Nélio Pita, who has been the general assistant of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) since 2022, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Born on October 11, 1973, in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Madeira, he joined the Portuguese Province of the Congregation of the Mission on September 15, 1994, and was ordained a priest on July 29, 2000, in Funchal.
With a Licentiate in Theology from the Portuguese Catholic University and further studies in Spiritual Theology and Clinical Psychology, D. Nélio Pita is a respected figure in both religious and academic circles. His extensive background includes roles as director of the Major Seminary of the Portuguese Province of the Congregation of the Mission and parish priest of São Tomás de Aquino Parish in Lisbon.
The Archdiocese of Braga, one of Portugal's three metropolitan archdioceses, is renowned for its rich liturgical tradition and historical significance. The appointment of D. Nélio Pita is seen as a strengthening of the Archdiocese's leadership, alongside Archbishop D. José Cordeiro and Auxiliary Bishop D. Delfim Gomes.
