Thousands of travellers heading to Portugal this weekend could face significant disruptions due to ongoing ground handler strikes. The strikes, involving SPdH and Menzies staff, are set to impact six of Portugal's busiest airports, including Lisbon, Porto, and Faro, until September.
Why Are the Strikes Happening?

Which Airports Are Affected?
The strikes will affect airports in:
- Lisbon
- Faro
- Porto
- Madeira
- Porto Santo
- Azores
When Will the Strikes Take Place?
Passengers can expect disruptions from Friday to Monday every weekend in August, extending to September 1. Key dates include:
- 8-11 August
- 15-18 August
- 22-25 August
- 29 August - 1 September
Official Advice for Travellers
The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has issued a warning, advising travellers to check for announcements and follow their airline or tour operator's guidance. "Industrial action by baggage handlers at Portuguese airports from Friday to Monday during the months of July and August may cause delays," the FCDO stated.
Broader Impact
This isn't the only travel disruption in Europe. Similar strikes in Spain are affecting 12 airports, including Madrid and Barcelona, with walkouts planned every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until December 2025.
