The Programa Regional Algarve 2030 has issued an open call (ALGARVE-2024-58) for municipalities in the Algarve to submit applications for €40 million in eligible investment in urban water cycle infrastructure. This initiative coincides with the National Water Day, emphasizing the importance of sustainable water management.

Key Areas for Funding

Financed operations will focus on:

• Expanding sanitation coverage to improve public health and environmental standards.
• Building and rehabilitating water supply and sanitation infrastructure to enhance reliability and capacity.
• Rehabilitating and constructing infrastructure to reduce saltwater intrusion in central urban systems, addressing critical regional challenges.
• Developing and repairing water connection infrastructure where public networks are absent or malfunctioning.

Strategic Importance and Regional Goals

Submitting these applications and accelerating the execution of smart water management works is a strategic axis of the Algarve's regional water resilience policy. The CCDR Algarve, in its role managing European cohesion funds at the regional level and in coordination with AMAL, is advocating for additional European funds for the urban water cycle under the ongoing reprogramming of Portugal 2030. This aims to achieve greater efficiency, reduce water losses, and mitigate the effects of saltwater intrusion.
