Summary:

  • Nationality law discussion postponed to September, allowing more time for debate

  • 'Mini-SEF' and foreigners' law to be approved this week, signaling a fast-track approach

  • Right-wing bloc rejects hearings with immigrant associations, raising concerns over inclusivity

  • PS MP Isabel Moreira criticizes the rush, warning against bypassing mandatory consultations

Key legislative changes are on the horizon in Portugal, with the nationality law being postponed to September, while the so-called 'mini-SEF' (National Unit for Foreigners and Borders within PSP) and the foreigners' law are set to be approved by the end of this week.

During a heated committee meeting, PS MP Isabel Moreira expressed her dismay as the right-wing bloc rejected hearings with immigrant associations. Moreira highlighted concerns that the Democratic Alliance (AD) is rushing these laws without awaiting mandatory consultations.

Legislative Changes

This move has sparked a debate on the balance between national security and immigrant rights, with critics arguing that the haste may overlook crucial stakeholder inputs.
