Portugal's Historic Acquisition of A-29N Super Tucano
On December 12, 2024, the Portuguese government announced its groundbreaking decision to acquire 12 Embraer A-29N Super Tucano light attack aircraft for €200 million. This acquisition follows a resolution from July 4, 2024, which paved the way for technical discussions with Embraer regarding the aircraft's adaptation to NATO standards.
Key Features of the A-29N Super Tucano
The A-29N Super Tucano, unveiled by Embraer in April 2023, is designed for various missions including close air support (CAS), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), as well as advanced pilot training. This NATO-compliant variant includes a NATO datalink, single-pilot operation capability, and advanced training systems that utilize augmented, virtual, and mixed reality technologies.
Addressing Capability Gaps
This acquisition addresses the capability gap in the Portuguese Air Force, which arose after the retirement of Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jets in January 2018. The A-29N will perform multiple roles, including supporting Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) missions and fulfilling requirements outlined in the 2022-2034 Military Strategic Vision.
Investment in Defense
Portugal's Military Programming Law (MPL), revised on August 17, 2023, allocated €180.5 million for the “Close Air Support” project. This budget includes the acquisition of support infrastructure, although specific details and timelines are still pending. The Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Air Force emphasized the significance of a light attack aircraft for operational roles and advanced training during the AED Days 2024.
Collaboration with the Portuguese Industry
A memorandum of understanding signed in April 2023 between Embraer and four Portuguese companies—CEiiA, Empordef, GMV, and OGMA—ensures local industry involvement in the A-29N's development and production. OGMA, where Embraer holds a majority stake, will play a vital role in the aircraft's production and maintenance.
A New Chapter for NATO
With this acquisition, Portugal becomes the first European operator of the A-29N Super Tucano, marking a significant milestone for Embraer's efforts to expand its presence within NATO. The agreement aims to enhance interoperability within the alliance by equipping the Portuguese Air Force with an aircraft tailored to NATO's operational needs. Further details regarding the delivery schedule and the extent of local industry involvement will be disclosed upon formal contract signing.
