The Romans in Lisbon: A Journey Back in Time
Over two thousand years ago, when Lisbon was known as Olissipo and inhabited by the Phoenicians, the Romans began to arrive. Initially visiting for holidays, they soon decided to stay, captivated by the land's natural beauty and richness by the Tagus River.
But how did the Romans end up in Lisbon? What was daily life like for these Roman Lisboetas? Did Caesar really season his food with a Lisbon-made condiment? And what connection do the Romans have with our Carnival?
Could it be that the Romans were also the inventors of the ancestors of canned sardines?
Lídia Fernandes, an archaeologist and coordinator of the Museu de Lisboa – Teatro Romano, shares this fascinating story that has left its mark on Lisbon's culture—and even on Brazilian culture.
Welcome to the second episode of Lisboa.BR, a podcast produced by journalist Álvaro Filho, with audio and images by Líbia Florentino, sound mixing and graphics by André Pinto. Funded by the Lisboa, Cultura e Media program, from Lisboa Cultura – Câmara Municipal de Lisboa.
