Two inmates have escaped from the high-security Alcoentre Prison in a bold breakout. The escape occurred on Monday evening, with the inmates climbing a wall and descending with a rope, a method described as "well-planned" by Frederico Morais, a leader of the National Prison Guard Union.
The Escape Details
- The fugitives, aged 37 and 44, are Portuguese nationals serving sentences for drug trafficking and robbery.
- One had previously attempted to escape from a prison in Ponta Delgada, Azores.
- The escape happened in an area where surveillance cameras were not operational, and guard towers were unmanned due to staff shortages.
Aftermath and Investigations
- Authorities have launched a manhunt and an internal investigation to determine how the escape was possible.
- The union had warned of a potential escape attempt since June 27, but officials claim they were unaware of any alerts.
This incident follows another escape from Vale de Judeus prison, located just 3 kilometers from Alcoentre, ten months prior.
