Domingos Xavier Viegas, a retired professor from the University of Coimbra and one of Portugal's most renowned fire specialists, has made a stark declaration: "Wildfires are a problem we won't be able to solve." In an interview with JN, Viegas criticized the investment in military equipment, following the European Union's lead, and argued that the priority should be investing in people, especially those who face the fires, which are cyclical.

Viegas explains the current situation in Portugal, with so many consecutive wildfires, as a result of unusual climatic conditions. A prolonged rainy winter led to abundant vegetation growth, followed by weeks of high temperatures that dried out the vegetation, making it highly flammable. The country's topography and wind conditions further exacerbate the spread of fires, making them difficult to control.
