In a heated parliamentary session, the leader of the PSD (Social Democratic Party) parliamentary group, Hugo Soares, accused André Ventura, president of the Chega party, of being 'incendiary' for leaving the Assembly of the Republic to attend a protest by immigrants outside the building.
Accusations During Debate on Fires
The accusation came during a debate proposed by the PS (Socialist Party) on forming an independent technical commission regarding the August wildfires. Ventura participated for the first hour but left shortly after 4:00 PM. Soares stated, 'When a serious debate on fires is underway, Deputy André Ventura sneaked away and is outside provoking immigrants in Portugal—this is a disgrace.'
Defense of Legitimate Protests
Soares emphasized that while many in the PSD might believe immigration needs to be controlled, none would disrupt a 'legitimate protest'. With microphones off, he repeatedly called Ventura 'incendiary'.
Parliamentary Tensions
The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Aguiar-Branco, expressed fatigue over misuse of procedural rules and threatened to halt proceedings after the debate's first hour was marked by constant deviations from the topic. He warned, 'I think those against democracy wish for work to be interrupted,' urging deputies to collaborate and show institutional loyalty.
Chega's Response
In reply, Chega's parliamentary leader, Pedro Pinto, accused Soares of physically threatening deputy Pedro Frazão during an inaudible part of the session, adding another layer to the political clash.
