Embark on a journey through Portugal's stunning Vouga Valley aboard the country's only remaining narrow-gauge railway line. The Vouga Historical Train, affectionately known as "the Vouginha" by locals, offers a unique opportunity to travel in a vintage locomotive through breathtaking landscapes.
Why such an enthusiastic welcome? This isn't just any train. Comprised of a navy-blue 1964 Basque Railway diesel locomotive and five early 20th-Century carriages, the Vouginha is a beloved summer visitor, trundling along a twisting 46km stretch from Aveiro to Macinhata do Vouga and back. This six-hour excursion also includes a visit to the artsy city of Águeda.
Plan your trip: The Vouga Historical Train runs Saturdays in July and August, departing from Aveiro at 13:45 and returning from Vouga at 20:07. Tickets cost €41 (£35) and €25 (£21) for children.
A living history: Constructed between 1907 and 1914, the Vouga line originally extended 96km north to Espinho and 140km east to Viseu. Today, it offers a glimpse into Portugal's railway past, with beautifully restored carriages from Italy, Portugal, Belgium, and Germany.
All aboard: The train features open-air platforms, allowing passengers to enjoy the breeze and sweeping views of farmland and the Serra do Arestal mountains. Stops include Macinhata do Vouga, where a folk band greets passengers, and Águeda, known for its vibrant art festival and Umbrella Sky Project.
A nod to the past: The Macinhata do Vouga Railway Museum offers insights into the line's history, including how Germany paid its debt to Portugal with machines after World War I and the quirky system of platform signage involving a "naughty boy" statue.
A journey to remember: As the train makes its way back to Aveiro, passengers are treated to golden hour views of the Vouga Valley, cheered on by rural residents. The Vouginha's return each summer is a testament to its enduring appeal, offering a nostalgic ride through Portugal's picturesque landscapes.
