The Minister of Environment has announced a new inspection initiative targeting Algarve's beaches, starting next week. This move aims to investigate claims of restricted access to beaches along the Algarve coast and to ensure that concessionaires are fulfilling their public service obligations.
Maria da Graça Carvalho, speaking in Quarteira, Loulé, detailed that the inspections will span the upcoming month, with findings to be released in early September. This follows a similar assessment conducted in Grândola's coastal area by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
"The APA, alongside the National Maritime Authority, will carry out inspections in the Algarve. Starting next week, despite fewer complaints compared to Grândola, a comprehensive plan will cover the entire Algarve coast," stated the minister.
The inspections will not only focus on access issues but also verify the provision of public services by beach concessionaires, including safety measures, first aid availability, and the condition of restrooms and showers.
This initiative mirrors a previous operation in Grândola, where 22 beaches were inspected, revealing varied access conditions. The government is also implementing measures like expanding public transport and installing parking limiters to improve beach accessibility.
Key measures include:
- Placement of signs indicating pedestrian access
- Collaboration on projects for unrestricted parking and access
- Continuous monitoring and enforcement of beach regulations
