The Port Authority of Funchal has updated the strong wind warning for the Madeira coastal area, extending it until 6 AM on Monday, July 7th.
This update is based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) regarding the general weather conditions (wind and sea) for the maritime area of the archipelago.
Weather Conditions
The regional maritime authority states that the wind will be from the North/Northeast, "fresh (31-39 km/h) to very fresh (40-50 km/h), sometimes strong (51-61 km/h)".
Regarding visibility, it indicates that it should be "good to moderate", with waves expected from the Northeast with heights of two to three meters on the North coast. On the South side of the island, the swell (from the South quadrant) should not exceed one meter in height.
Safety Recommendations
Due to these meteorological conditions, the port authority "recommends the entire maritime community and the general public to take precautions, both in preparing to go to sea and when at sea or in coastal areas".
The Port Authority of Funchal emphasizes that mooring should be reinforced and there should be close surveillance of docked and anchored vessels. It advises avoiding walks near the sea or in areas exposed to sea agitation and not engaging in recreational fishing, especially near cliffs and areas frequently hit by wave breakers.
