Gouveia e Melo Criticizes President Marcelo's Comments on Trump

Presidential candidate Henrique Gouveia e Melo strongly criticized Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa this Friday for labeling Donald Trump as a "Soviet asset." Gouveia e Melo argued that a President should not make personal comments, as they represent the Portuguese state.

"The President should not make personal or individual comments because he represents the Portuguese state, and we are an ally of the United States," Gouveia e Melo told journalists in Lagoa, Algarve.

This reaction came after Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa's statements at the PSD's Summer University on Wednesday, where he considered that the President of the United States acts like a 'Soviet asset' who has "strategically favored the Russian Federation" in the conflict with Ukraine.

On the sidelines of a visit to the Fatacil Fair in Lagoa, Algarve, the presidential candidate stated that "foreign policy is defined by the Government, so the President of the Republic is only a representative of that policy."

When asked if Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa's comments could trigger a diplomatic conflict, Gouveia e Melo noted that "only the Americans can decide on that."

"We are an ally of the United States of America and we live in turbulent times in the international order, and it is important to maintain our alliances in the most critical moments," he emphasized.

Regarding the commemorations of November 25, proposed by the Government, Henrique Gouveia e Melo considered it an "important date, although April 25 has another dimension, which was the fall of a regime that lasted almost 50 years."

"November 25 was the correction of a trajectory that could have been another path towards a left-wing dictatorship, and I think we should give importance to both dates," he pointed out, noting that April 25 "has more relevance."

"One cannot live without the other. Without November 25, perhaps we would not have the democracy we have today," he concluded.
