The Social Security Institute has initiated an investigation into the tragic fire that occurred this Saturday at a nursing home in Mirandela, resulting in six fatalities.
A spokesperson for Social Security assured RTP that, "as of now, the establishment was in compliance with the safety plan according to legal requirements, and a room inspection had been conducted just ten minutes prior to the incident."
The institute further stated that it is "working in coordination with the local authority, health authority, and police entities to provide all necessary support to the elderly and their families, and to oversee their transfer."
The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Saturday at the Misericórdia de Mirandela nursing home, claimed six lives and left 25 injured, five of whom are in serious condition. The injured were transported to hospitals in Mirandela, Macedo de Cavaleiros, and Bragança. Approximately 90 residents were evacuated to other facilities.
The blaze is believed to have started in one of the institution's rooms. The Judicial Police are currently investigating the incident.
The institution's ombudsman revealed that the nursing home's smoke alarm did not activate when the fire broke out, but assured that the facility's fire extinguishers were operational and had been serviced within the mandatory timeframes.
In light of the severity of the situation, the municipality of Mirandela has declared three days of mourning. The President of the Republic and the Prime Minister have already extended their condolences to the victims' families.
