Summary:

  • Portugal's Golden Visa Program expected to see increased demand from North America, UK, and Asia in 2025.

  • Real estate investment route was terminated in October 2023 to tackle the housing crisis.

  • Investment fund options are particularly attractive to North American and UK investors.

  • Over 5.4 million Americans living abroad, many favoring Portugal for residency.

  • Authorities are working to streamline processing to meet the surge in applications.

In 2025, Portugal's Golden Visa Program is expected to see significant changes driven by increased demand from North America, the UK, and Asian markets. The Residency by Investment Scheme allows nationals from non-EU countries to gain residency through financial investments in Portugal.

Rising Interest from North America, the UK & Asian Markets

The most popular route previously available was real estate investment, which was suspended in October 2023 to address the housing crisis. However, other investment options remain appealing. Notably, the investment fund option is attracting many investors from North America and the UK, alongside alternatives like donations for the arts, job creation, and scientific research.

A report from Imi Daily indicates that over 5.4 million Americans were living abroad as of November 2023, with many choosing European countries, particularly Portugal, for residency and citizenship opportunities. The rise in interest is partly linked to the recent US presidential election and other socio-economic factors.

Similarly, Britons continue to show high interest in the Golden Visa Program, particularly following the UK's exit from the EU. The Eastern market, especially China, is also witnessing increased demand, making nationals from these regions top beneficiaries of the program.

Enhancements in Application Processing

To accommodate the growing interest, Portuguese authorities are committed to streamlining application processes. Reports from October 2023 highlighted that long waiting times have left many applicants frustrated, prompting the government to intensify efforts to expedite the processing of Golden Visa applications.
