Wildfires originating in Trancoso and Sátão have now engulfed ten municipalities, with three major active fronts, as reported by Jody Rato, the second regional commander of the Center, to Lusa agency.
The Extent of the Disaster
The fires, initially confined to Trancoso and Sátão, have rapidly spread, affecting areas including Sernancelhe, Moimenta da Beira, Penedono, and are now encroaching on São João da Pesqueira in the Viseu district. The Guarda district is also under threat, with fires reaching Aguiar da Beira, Fornos de Algodres, Meda, and Celorico da Beira.
Three massive active fronts are currently battling, one stretching over 20 kilometers. The northern zone, particularly Penedono and São João da Pesqueira, is the most concerning due to its intensity.

Emergency Response Efforts
A total of 1,368 operational personnel and 461 vehicles are deployed, with seven tracked machines and aerial means being mobilized. Despite the efforts, the day is expected to be challenging due to the vast area and adverse weather conditions.
Three minor injuries were reported overnight, including a firefighter affected by smoke, who is expected to return to duty after treatment.
Damage Assessment
The flames have caused destruction to homes, vehicles, warehouses, and businesses, with the full extent yet to be confirmed. Priority remains on combating the fires over damage assessment.

The fire in Freches, Trancoso, was reported on Saturday, August 9, at 17:20, while the Vila Boa fire in Sátão began early Wednesday, August 13, quickly spreading to neighboring municipalities.
