The Alkantara Festival, dedicated to stage arts, is set to take place from November 14th to 23rd across nine venues in Lisbon. The opening performance, 'Umuko', is by the acclaimed choreographer Dorothée Munyaneza, last year's winner of the first Salavisa European Dance Award.
A Festival of Diverse Performances
This year's festival will feature a mix of national and international productions, alongside workshops and talks. Venues include Culturgest, TBA, CCB, Gulbenkian Modern Art Centre, Sala Valentim de Barros, Lisbon Municipal Galleries, ZDB 8 Marvila, MAAT, and Carpintarias de São Lázaro.
Notable Highlights
- Dorothée Munyaneza's 'Umuko': A celebration of creativity and freedom by Rwandan artists, reflecting on the post-genocide generation.
- Vânia Doutel Vaz's 'Violetas': An intimate dance piece making its Lisbon debut at Teatro do Bairro Alto.
- Chiara Bersani's 'Michel – Os animais que sou': A groundbreaking performance featuring non-normative bodies, inspired by jazz pianist Michel Petrucciani.
- María del Mar Suárez's Flamenco Fusion: A unique blend of flamenco with urban dance styles like krump and voguing at CCB.
A Change in Venue
For the first time, São Luiz Theatre will not host the festival, marking the end of a long-standing partnership since 2006.
