Engaging with Cultural and Religious Diversity
In a recent conversation during the Christmas season, Bishop D. Manuel Quintas, who has been at the helm of the Algarve Diocese since 2000, shared his insights on various pressing issues facing the region. Welcoming us at the Episcopal Palace in Faro, he emphasized the importance of cultural and religious diversity as a wealth for everyone in the Algarve.
The Core Mission of the Church
Bishop Quintas highlighted that the main challenge for any diocese is closely tied to the Church's mission: announcing the person of Christ and His Gospel. He quoted Pope Paul VI, stating, "The Church exists to evangelize." This mission is not solely the responsibility of the clergy but involves all baptized individuals, emphasizing the need for collective engagement to adapt to the profound changes of our times.
Engaging Youth in Catholic Faith
When discussing the Church's efforts to involve young people, he remarked that youth ministry has become a top priority within the diocese's pastoral programs. Young individuals, alongside their spiritual guides, have taken an active role in this initiative, showing enthusiasm and commitment. The Bishop believes that their involvement in the Church will deepen as they cultivate a stronger relationship with Christ, facilitated through regular practices such as listening to the Word of God, prayer, and volunteering. However, he acknowledged the challenges posed by the mobility of youth, particularly those pursuing higher education outside the Algarve, which can hinder the formation of cohesive groups.
Bishop Quintas concluded with a heartfelt Christmas message to the readers, encouraging a spirit of hope and community during the festive season.
