Four climate activists were detained during a protest organized by Climáximo at Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport. The activists, part of a group of about 50, were arrested for "disobedience" after refusing to leave a street leading to the airport, despite police orders. The protest aimed to block access to the airport during peak flight hours, highlighting the environmental impact of aviation.
The Protest's Goals
The march, starting at 3:00 PM from the Relógio roundabout, was part of a broader campaign to stop the expansion of the aviation industry, reduce emissions, and demand free public transport for all. Activists carried signs with messages like "Less Airplane, More Housing" and "Disarm the Fossil Industry," chanting slogans against the aviation sector's environmental damage.
Climáximo's Statement
Climáximo criticized the record profits of ANA (the airport operator) amidst climate crises, arguing that the aviation sector must drastically reduce its operations to combat climate change effectively. The group linked the protest to broader environmental and social justice issues, including housing crises exacerbated by climate disasters.
Solidarity March
The remaining activists announced a march to the Olivais police station to await the release of the detained individuals, showing solidarity and continuing their protest against climate inaction.
